Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years

A prequel spin-off following young SpongeBob at summer camp.

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years (often shortened to *Kamp Koral*) is an American animated series that debuted on Paramount+ on March 4, 2021. It serves as both a prequel and a spin-off to *SpongeBob SquarePants*, the Nickelodeon show created by Stephen Hillenburg. The series depicts younger versions of the main characters as they attend a summer camp. The show was developed by Luke Brookshier, Marc Ceccarelli, Andrew Goodman, Kaz, Mr. Lawrence, and Vincent Waller.

The idea for the series came from flashback scenes in the 2020 film *The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run*. In October 2018, shortly after becoming president of Nickelodeon, Brian Robbins assembled a team to brainstorm potential *SpongeBob* spin-offs. A spin-off was reported in February 2019, and in June 2019, *Kamp Koral* was officially announced with a 13-episode first season, later expanded to 26 episodes in March 2021. A second season of 13 episodes was ordered in August 2021 and premiered on Paramount+ on July 10, 2024.

The show follows a 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants during his summer at a sleepaway camp called Kamp Koral. The camp is run by Mr. Krabs, a single father raising his baby daughter Pearl. Mrs. Puff serves as the scoutmaster and arts-and-crafts teacher. SpongeBob shares a cabin with his friends Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks, supervised by Squidward Tentacles, a pessimistic junior counselor who is nearly a teenager. Unbeknownst to the campers, Plankton—the chef at the camp's Krusty Kanteen—operates a secret laboratory beneath the camp, where his computer assistant Karen helps him devise world-domination schemes. Episodes center on SpongeBob and his friends exploring the campsite, discovering new places, and engaging in summer activities.

The voice cast includes Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy (shown with braces), Mr. Lawrence as Plankton, Mary Jo Catlett as Mrs. Puff, Jill Talley as Karen, and Lori Alan as baby Pearl. Two hillbilly narwhals named Nobby and Narlene (voiced by Carlos Alazraqui and Kate Higgins) live near the camp, and a child version of Nosferatu, called Kidferatu, works as a camp counselor.

Originally slated for a July 2020 Nickelodeon premiere, the series was moved to CBS All Access (later Paramount+) in early 2021. The first six episodes launched alon

Reader's Guide

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years holds significance as the first CG-animated spin-off of the long-running SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, expanding the universe into a prequel setting. Its development followed the death of series creator Stephen Hillenburg, who had reportedly expressed reluctance about derivative projects. The series faced backlash from fans and criticism from former showrunner Paul Tibbitt, who called it 'greedy, lazy executive-ing.' Reception was mixed: some critics found the animation and comedy lacking compared to the original, while others praised the return of the original voice cast and noted occasional creative sparks. The series also participated in a 'SpongeBob Universe' crossover special, 'The Tidal Zone,' which aired in January 2023.
