Lore & Background

The series follows King Julien XIII, a ring-tailed lemur who ascends to the throne after his uncle, King Julien XII, abdicates upon a prophecy that the king will be eaten by fossa at dawn. The new king legalizes noise and public events, ushering in an era of radical change. He is aided by royal advisor Maurice, head of security Clover, and his obsessive lackey Mort. His impulsive decrees include water slides, trampolines, caffeinated beverages, art shows, and border walls, with mixed results.

Reader's Guide

The Exiled season, a spinoff between seasons 4 and 5, depicts the exile of Julien XIII by the tyrant Koto, a mountain lemur dictator. After Koto's army invades, Julien and Maurice escape from a POW camp and embark on adventures involving a Soviet submarine, communist space monkeys, and a multiverse portal. Mort discovers he is an immortal being with multiple alter egos. The series concludes with the fifth season, after which villains reform, setting the stage for the arrival of Alex on Madagascar. The show was removed from Netflix globally in November 2023 and began streaming on Kidoodle.TV as of March 2026.
