Lore & Background

The creation of the characters began in 2006, at which time they were visually different and lacked arms. Voice acting was handled by Aardman Animations, while modeling, animation, and sound processing were done by VoozClub, Cromosoma, and BRB International. The series aired internationally through CITV in South Korea and worldwide via ITV Network. A third season was announced to be in development.

Canimals gained significance as a multinational co-production blending live-action and animation, with a distinctive premise of animals living in cans. In South Korea, it premiered on EBS in 2011 and received high viewership ratings, being well-received throughout the country. In the United Kingdom, it achieved a peak viewership of around 153,800 viewers on 4 February 2013, becoming one of CITV's flagship shows and delivering the second highest average audience viewing figures against competitors in the afternoons, as well as the highest average in the mornings. The series won the Grand Prize President Award at the Korean Content Awards in 2011 and was nominated for the Licensing Challenge at MIPJR 2010. It also ranked second among more than 1,000 works at MIPCOM Junior 2009, winning the best animation award. Its addition to Netflix in 2015 and subsequent removals and returns reflect its ongoing distribution. The series' legacy includes its role in demonstrating cross-continental animation collaboration and its appeal to young audiences.
